My Favorite Movies of the Year*

It's getting to be that time of year when people talk about their favorite things. Me being a "people", I figured it would be appropriate to write a list of my favorite films.

10. Attack the Block

9. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

8. Thor

7. Captain America

6. Step Up 3D

5. Midnight in Paris - I went into this one not knowing much about it and I ended up loving it. I'm not the biggest fan of Woody Allen movies, but Owen Wilson does a good job in the role of his proxy. I recommend this to anyone that has one of those posters of an old French advertisement or anybody that thought that Ernest Hemmingway took himself a little too seriously.

4. Bridesmaids - Okay, this movie is just plain funny. I've heard a lot of talk about this being a different kind of "chick flick" and how women are allowed to be funny now, but that talk is just dumb. It's a funny movie. Go watch it and laugh. I recommend this to anybody that likes fun, whether or not you have a Y chromosome.

3. Beginners - This is the first sad movie I put on the list and it's really good. It's also not that sad. Granted a good portion of it deals with coping with the loss of a loved one, but there is also a really sweet romance there too. I dare any guy not to fall in love with Mélanie Laurent. I recommend this to anyone who likes their happy with a little sad or visa versa.

2. Drive - I loved this movie, but I recognize that it probably isn't for everybody. It's very violent, so that might turn some people off, but it's also very minimalist. Pretty much everybody in the cast is outstanding. I recommend this movie if you're just kind of sick of people talking.

1. The Muppets - Full disclosure: I love the Muppets. I went into this one trying to reign in my desire for it to be fantastic, but any doubt was unfounded because this is a great movie. I'll admit that it lags a tiny bit in the second act, but there are still some fantastic musical numbers in there too. I'll admit that I cried at the end. I recommend this to anyone who has a soul.

*Pending the viewing of the following films on my "to see" list:

Martha Marcy May Marlene
Tree of Life

Super
The Skin I Live In
Contagion
War Horse
Mission Impossible 3: Ghost Protocol

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
